PROJECTS
Specialist restoration and repair work aided by the Friends

2010 The 'Friends' Door

When repairs were being done to the tower, including its roof and several of the pinnacles, we gave £5,000 to provide a door at the top of the stairs where previously there had not been one so that all the leaves (and the pigeons?) blew down the stairs.

2012. The new floor in the Athelhampton Chapel
Damp had been a terrible problem in the chapel for decades, causing damage to the important collection of medieval monuments. Major re-ordering involved moving the alabaster one seen here from against the wall, and we gave £3,500 for the new flagstone floor to surround it.

2014 Printing of the booklet
written by the archaeologists Brian and Moira Gittos.

The conservation of the Athelhampton Monuments had attracted interest from archaeologists nationally, and much public money had been subscribed to pay for the work, so we were pleased to be able to offer £1,000 for the production of this beautiful and informative book.

2016 New altar table by Ron Emmett.
With the reordering of the Chancel Aisle to create a flexible space for worship, teaching - and now the Food Bank - came the need for an altar that could be moved aside for certain requirements. Ron Emmett is a Dorset artist and furniture designer who has provided many pieces for West Country churches. The PCC chose this lovely example of his work which, in case anyone should think to steal it, is inscribed on the underneath to say that The Friends gave it. (£3,250)
2016 Reordering of the Shell Screen
£10,000. Part of the creation of the new flexible area involved moving the 1911 'Shell Screen' a little to the west, to make a bigger space.

2023
We commissioned reports on the condition and history of the 2 windows on the north side of the church which have fragments of (probably medieval) glass (£700)The coloured glass, from several different periods, is in need of care and conservation. The reports have served as a 'pump primer', and the PCC is now pursuing this project.
